At Ultra Tee, we’re passionate about creating beautiful clothes that not only fuse together thoughtful designs with soft hand-feel fabrics but respecting the planet as we make them.
Indeed, in today’s fast-fashion culture, where consumers are buying more clothes than ever before, we think it’s super important to offer a sustainable, ethical alternative. Every piece we make is designed to stand the test of time and look great in a whole host of different settings, whether that’s a walk in the park, a day in the office or a night out with friends, extending the value of our clothing and encouraging you to change the way you think about your wardrobe.
We’re often asked how we create our clothing, and though our processes differ greatly from piece to piece, we thought we’d pull back the curtain for a “behind the scenes” look…
We use both organic and conventional cotton (from sustainable sources) to create our tees, as well as recycled polyester and occasionally Tencel, which is fibre made from eucalyptus pulp. We take pride in the materials we use to create our clothing and regularly look for new partners when launching new items to ensure our pieces are as sustainable as possible.
As we head towards the autumn and winter months, we also use great quality cashmere to create our jumpers. For these pieces, we source materials and labour in Mongolia, paying workers a fair wage, before bringing the jumpers to our bases in France and England for print and embroidery work to finish off the look and create cosy and comfortable clothing.
Once we receive our tees, jumpers, hoodies, and other pieces to our bases in France and London, we most commonly embroid designs into the front. Our in-house embroidery facility in London allows us to be efficient and produce clothing on demand for B2B and B2C orders.
Though we often prepare tees and hoodies in advance when anticipating high demand, such as when launching a new line, most of our pieces are finished one by one when orders come in. This allows us to reduce waste and deliver our orders with a very short lead time for our customers, both consumers on the Ultra Tee website, and B2B orders from clothing stores.
When we receive large orders, we collaborate with our long-term embroidery partners in Reims, France, who follow the same techniques and take great care embroidering clothing.
We use high-quality viscose/rayon biodegradable and sustainable yarns when embroidering designs into our tees and hoodies, manufactured by Maderia UK. We don’t use any APO or APE softners (also known as Alkyl Phenol Oethoxylates or Ethoxylates), meaning the dye in our threads are non-toxic to workers, the environment and you, the customer, both before, during and after production, meaning you can enjoy your tees without any worries.
We use the Brother PR670E machine, which features six needles to allow for a wide range of colours to be used in one design. Opting for machine embroidery over hand embroidery not only allows us to keep costs low but ensure a perfect finish, reducing waste and allowing our customers to enjoy our adorable designs on their new tees and hoodies, like this fox below!
Once the design has been embroidered onto the tee, hoodie, or jumper, it’s manually inspected by the Ultra Tee team before being carefully folded and packaged for distribution.
Though the majority of our designs are embroidered, we also use digital printing for some of our products, using water-based inks that are better for the environment. All of our inks are certified by Confidence In Textile, the world’s leader in health labels, and each ink is tested for its colour and longevity before being added to our manufacturing line. We want to ensure our printed tees and jumpers stand the test of time so you can enjoy them for years to come.
We carry out our digital printing from our workshops in the UK, France, and Portugal, and we also work with partners around the world depending on demand to fulfil orders on our behalf.
When we do outsource our water-based-ink printing, we only use suppliers who respect the rights of their workers and have the same high standard of working conditions as we do.
How we’re helping the planet
We’re proud to be a member of the Plant for the Planet Foundation, which aims to plant one trillion trees by the end of 2020 to the reverse the effects of our climate crisis. Yes, that’s 1,000,000,000,000 trees! Back in 2011, the United Nations handed over the Billion Tree Campaign to Plant for the Planet and so far, the foundation has planted an incredible 14 billion trees in more than 193 countries around the world. In Mexico, for example, a new tree is planted by the foundation every fourteen seconds, but we want to support their efforts.
Whenever you buy a product from Ultra Tee, we donate 1€ to the foundation, equivalent to planting one tree. Stock up on a new wardrobe, and you’ll have planted a forest! Together, we can make a real difference and create a greener, more environmentally-friendly world.
